Afternoon Raga for St Johns at Proper Eats during No.Fest 2010

People of this multiverse,

I had a video recently glimmer and glow before a room full of people here in the transcendent St Johns neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. For those of you who have previously asked yrself: “Could he be any more vague?” I give you this:

Walking back from the central library, from where I picked up treasures of Cecil Taylor and ELO, standing on NW Park, waiting to cross Burnside, I noticed one person, a blanket shrouded shaggy man, across the street, up the block, walking towards me. Burnside traffic was thick and aggressive, so I was going nowhere, so I watched him shuffle closer. When he finally reached the intersection, he became two people, a very tall, very beautiful blonde woman and a highly conservative business man. When this one person became two people, they parted and went in opposite directions, the man heading east, the woman heading west. Traffic cleared. I went back to work.

Not to diminish a totally rehearsed and polished output, I just want to go on record here and posit a question:

Why is it that at this point in creative history that visual arts rendered with a loose hand or abstract style are accepted and revered, yet the moment one moves the medium to sound, a tag of sloppy or untalented is applied, regardless of talent or spacial/time composition? Are we not yet in an age where primitive or naive sound output is acceptable? Is it that I’m in USA where the vast majority of the creative class is undervalued?

I Don’t Know Passes 4 & 5

Passes/pieces 4 & 5 for the upcoming Trickhouse issuance are below. #5 was going to be the final one for about a month until #6 came and made itself known (which is good as it’s more of a toe tapper).

To recap: the final piece will appear in the next issue of Trickhouse.org. There are plans afoot for a celebration party in conjunction with the Yardmeter Editions folks in early March. The live event will be in Shelton Walsmith’s studio a stone’s throw from the head of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY. I’ll be streaming my performance in, so will be larger-than life, yet in a 2-dimensional scale. Details on all of this will follow once they are ready.

At the edge of a park sit four retired men, two Russian, two Mexican – all in America. All wearing black. They are crowded at the far left of the low mossy concrete bench, close to the street and bus shelter.

On the passing bus every human is contributing their own verbal overlay. Chatty, like a tree full of grackles. The bus robot voice calls out the stops, establishing a rhythm: N. Chataqua, N. Denver, N. Lombard.

My eyes are closed, the glare is great.

I’ve had increasing issues with “too much Discussion there.” There seems to be a boat afloat that has it guns pointed back at it’s bow and engine room. Who would pilot such a boat? I’ve been raised to ask “what the fuck?” but it is beginning to make me wonder about tax rates in Luxembourg.

The Trickhouse gig is on. Many thanks to Noah and deep gratitude to Shelton.
The idea pitched was that I would interview several people, asking them all the same 5 questions. From their responses, I would pull out the common thread (whatever that happened to be) and render it in song form.
